Blown Glass – Sarafand
Quantity
The art of glass-blowing in the Levant first came to life in Sarafand with – who other than? – the ancient Phoenicians. It all began when a group of Lebanese ancestors gathered by a fire one night with some shards of glass scattered around them. Once the fire died down and they returned to the spot the next day, they discovered that the pieces had smoothed out.
This simple observation soon transformed into a generations-old family business. In fact, the family starts teaching their children as soon as they turn 12, almost as a rite of passage.
Sarafand is all about giving back to the environment and helping teach sustainable living, which is why their glassware is 100% recycled from old bottles and other glass-based materials. Because the oven used can get quite overheated when doing frequent small batches, they wait for a large amount of orders to be placed before using it.
This new take on glass-blowing is what we can all do to help the world around us and still benefit from beautiful, hand-crafted items. Some might even call them art.
Support Lebanon by supporting Sarafand in their endeavors. A better world is waiting for us all!
